Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender youth are often isolated and afraid, as are their families. The taboo of speaking about gender and orientation has allowed fear and misinformation to dominate our culture. Because silence has persisted for so long, people do not know how to talk about these topics. If we do not begin to provide education and information to dispel fears, we are granting permission to those who harass and discriminate. Initiating dialogue is the most important part of our mission and one thing everyone can do to make a difference for all youth.
Our Communication Course gives speakers a way to generate dialogue that begins to dissolve fears and produce actions to protect all youth. Staff, board members, and volunteers who want to become speakers for YES Institute complete this two-day course to learn our model of communication.
We demonstrate effective ways to bypass the breakdowns that usually happen when there are opposing views of right and wrong. Practical exercises and theoretical presentations on the first day give speakers access to the concepts of our model, including relating authentically to others and responding with generosity. On day two, speakers practice the new model to experience generating powerful dialogue without fear of controversy or confrontation.
