First Layer of Understanding

50% of youth who identify as gay are rejected by their families.

Many people are fearful of discussing the topics of gender and orientation, and do not know how to respond when youth declare themselves to be gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. In Essentials of Orientation™, we distinguish common myths and stereotypes about gender and orientation, and highlight ways to make a positive difference for youth and families who may feel isolated and afraid.

Essentials of Orientation™ is the introductory course to our Gender/Orientation Series™. Regular participants include parents, students, teachers, counselors, healthcare professionals, and other service providers. Parents and children often attend this course together, building the foundation for further communication and education. One parent commented, “I’ve been so afraid. Now I have courage to accept my daughter and begin educating others in the Hispanic community.”
