Suicide Prevention Efforts
The 1999 Florida Youth Suicide Prevention Study report to the Florida State Legislature named YES one of three most promising community-based models of suicide prevention in the entire nation.

YES was invited to be part of an expert panel to assist with statewide suicide prevention efforts. The first session in Tampa began with the evaluation of a working draft of the school-based Suicide Prevention Toolkit. The Toolkit will be a one-stop resource for school administrators, counselors, and teachers and will cover critical aspects of suicide prevention, including myths and facts, school climate awareness, risk and protective factors, as well as cultural, ethnic, and diverse population concerns.
YES’ participation lends expertise and awareness of youth who are struggling with orientation and gender, identified by researchers as elevated risk factors for suicide. We suggested that diversity of youth be addressed throughout the tool kit rather than relegated to a small section in the margins. The researchers were grateful for these observations, and because of this valuable input, they plan to expand the scope. Read more

In 2003, the Dade Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (DAMFT) honored YES with the Professional Community Service Award for our educational work on gender and orientation.
DAMFT is a regional chapter of the Florida Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, an organization of more than 1,300 clinical professionals dedicated to leadership in education and research in marriage and family therapy across the state.
